Article by Sue Hille - A phrase often bantered about as though it were sacred is "spare the rod and spoil the child. " That is not a quotation from the Bible, but is based on Proverbs 13:24, "He that spareth his rod hateth his son, but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes." (K.J.V.) There are people who use this verse as a mandate for corporal punishment of their children. Is that what the Bible really teaches?
